Labour Leadership Race – Betting Market Update

Following Angela Eagle announcement that  she was pulling out of the Labour Leadership race it has been revealed that more than 180,000 new people registered to vote in what is considered as good news for the Corbyn camp with the expectation that the majority of these people are from the hard left section of the party and likely to vote for Corbyn.

The most recent poll (published before Eagle pulled out) forecast that Corbyn would comfortably win a one on one contest with Owen Smith. The poll showed 56% for Corbyn and 34% for Smith.

The combination of those two pieces of news have led to Corbyn being even stronger odds on favourite in the betting markets with best odds of 2/11 with Betfair (in from 2/5) whilst Owen Smith is available at 4/1 via Bet365, BoyleSports and Betfair. Corbyn launched his campaign on Thursday.

Can anything be done to stop Corbyn winning the contest  and potentially causing an irreversible split in the party? It doesn’t look like it, but only time will tell.
